A former U.S. military intelligence officer has been handed a seven-year jail sentence after promoting “delicate” defence data.
The U.S. Division of Justice mentioned in a information launch that Korbein Schultz was sentenced to 84 months in jail on Wednesday “for conspiring to gather and transmit nationwide defence data … to a person he believed was affiliated with the Chinese language authorities.”
Based on the Justice Division, Schultz despatched “dozens of delicate U.S. navy paperwork” to a contact in China, between Might 2022 and March 2024. It says these included a U.S. military doc on classes discovered from the conflict in Ukraine, some technical manuals, in addition to details about U.S. navy satellites and missile defence methods.
He was paid $42,000 US for these efforts, based on authorities.
In August 2024, Schultz pleaded responsible to fees that had been laid out in a previous indictment towards him.
In an announcement on Wednesday, U.S. Lawyer Common Pam Bondi mentioned Schultz “betrayed” an oath to defend the U.S. “for a payout,” which she mentioned put each the U.S. navy and repair members in danger.
“The Justice Division stays vigilant towards China’s efforts to focus on our navy and can be certain that those that leak navy secrets and techniques spend years behind bars,” Bondi mentioned.
